Power kiting is a great sport, but can be potentially dangerous for you and spectators. Below are some basic safety tips to ensure everyone can continue to enjoy this fun sport:

Never fly near or over large groups of people. Depending on conditions and the make and model of your kitesurfing kite, you can easily reach speeds over 70 miles per hour. If you collide with someone, this could potentially be fatal. There is also incredible tension of your kite lines, and these razor shapr lines could badly slice either you or an innocent bystander in the event of a collision. Many bystanders do not understand the dangers of power kiting, especially younger children, and it’s your responsibility to take all necessary precautions. If someone is in your kite zone, remind them to stay behind you at all times and be aware of your flight path if they choose to observe in any kind of close proximity.

When choosing a flight zone, be sure to avoid any potential obstacles, including trees, power lines, roads, freeways, car traffic, other kitesurfing kites, kite flyers, and kite lines. If you plan to fly anywhere in the vicinity of an airport, be sure you are more than 2 miles away. FAA rules prohibit any kites of any kind to be flow within this 2 mile limit. Kite lines generally have very low melting points, and if you collide with another power kite your lines will instantly break or melt.
